What is IED Comms?

IED Comms is a sofware solution for managing large numbers of IEDs (Intelligent Electronic Devices), commonly used for monitoring in power distribution networks.  The IED products are from companies such as; Areva, Rayrolle, Siemens, Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, GE, Cisco, Dewar, Tapcon, etc.  The solution consists of a central database, a web site and a client application that runs on the engineers workstation in the systray.  The database stores and maintains information about stations and their IEDs.  Each IED contains configuration details, connectivity instructions and application launch settings.

How does it work?

When the engineer needs to connect to an IED they click on a button on the IED Comms Website.  The launch configuration details are communicated back to the users PC to a listening program called IED Comms Client.  This program reconfigures the Lantronix Redirector settings and then runs the valid application for the IED Model.  Many and various applications can be utilised, for example; Hyperterminal, Telnet, Digsi etc.  IED Comms also supports the newer IED models that use TCP/IP networking, like... ssh, http, https, ftp, sftp etc.

IED Comms Web Interface

The following screen shot is a sample of the IED Comms Website interface viewing a list of IEDs for a specific station.
Other features of IED Comms include :

  • full auditing of access to IEDs
  • security control
  • easy configuration of any serial or networked IED

Who is it for?

IED Comms was built for SP AusNet beacuse they have hundreds of relays and IEDs to manage on a daily basis.  Any power company that falls into this category would also benefit greatly from using such a system.
